A Manifesto of Creative Redemption
My wife Genie and I ask what we should pass on to our grandchildren. How do we help them to choose love over career, character over credentials, hands-on experience of reality over mediated high tech facsimiles, depth of relationships over entertainment, continuity over displacement, what’s lasted over what’s sold as “new” and “improved”? You don’t need to be a college graduate or an astute observer of culture to see that in America today (and not just in America) there is an absence of what I think of aesthetic purposefulness. Instead of aesthetic purposefulness (a dedication to living in tune with what is most beautiful), what our culture holds up as an ideal is striving for what passes for “success.” Beauty is given short shrift. The art of life is given short shrift. In consequence there is a pervasive anemia in how we conduct our lives. How do we change that?
