My home community in Monteverde, Costa Rica, witnessed the disappearance of the golden toad 22 years agothe first terrestrial extinction caused by global warming. Since then, hundreds of plant and animal species have been disappearing at a rapid rate. You don't have to live in a Costa Rican cloud forest to see the impact of global warming. We've seen an increase in extreme weather events such as heatwaves, droughts, hurricanes, and floods. Soon, this crisis will ravage poor and indigenous people of color around the world. Climate experts have warned that if global emissions are not cut in half by 2030, the results will be irreversible. The churchconservative and progressiveremains largely silent on climate. This session will encourage people of faith to enter the conversation, just as we have done with other social justice issues. Tools will be provided to help. It's not too late, but Earth needs the church to address climate change as THE moral issue of our time. The key moral question underpinning climate change is how much value we place on the far future of humanity, and on the lives of people who will exist in that future.
