Content Type: connect & catch courage from stories
As the world seems ever more fraught, the stories we tell of saints—conventional and unconventional—help us and the children in our lives imagine how things could be. Author and peace activist Ken Sehested writes: “Telling stories of faithful witness—with faces and names and details—is far and away the most effective means of catching courage and transmitting hope.” This was my experience in researching and writing the profiles in Holy Troublemakers & Unconventional Saints, which I began working on shortly after the 2016 election and continue to return to for courage and inspiration.
Remembering that others have faced difficult times (often harder times) and have managed to maintain an anchor and a steady witness is enormously hopeful. If Bayard Rustin, Wangari Maathai, Thich Nhat Hahn, Valarie Kaur, or Maryam Molkara didn’t give up, then I can keep on keeping on too.
Note: There will be time built in to hear what’s on your hearts and help us catch courage from each other.
