When Jesus first uttered, \Do this in remembrance of me,\ was he intending to mandate a new religious practice, or did his words and actions point to something even bigger? Something that long predated that fateful night, the cross, or any of the events that followed? Throughout history, the Church has ascribed various theological meanings to the sacraments, from reminders of Christ's death, sacrifice, and our own sinfulness, to forgiveness of sins, and even a means of salvation. But what if we're missing a key element of the gift Jesus was offering us in these sacred rituals? Gifts that are rooted in his understanding of community, justice, and God's dream for the world. What if, by reclaiming the sacraments from centuries of religious piety, we could rediscover practices that not only feed our souls, but fuel our activism, nourish our work for justice, and guide us toward setting a table where all are truly welcome? You are welcome to bring food and drink as you are able.
