What starts a revolution? Political or religious ideology, the economy, human rights, or oppression are all valid reasons, some might say, for a revolution. However, the final straw is often the simplest of things, such as the price or lack of bread. The Boston Bread riots of 1710, the French Revolution, the Arab Spring. Other countries such as India, China, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Bangladesh, Indonesia, Pakistan, and Ethiopia, all but China, have experienced civil conflict in the past decade, and let’s not forget Palestine (Gaza and the West Bank.) Two thousand years ago, Palestine was in a state of civil unrest as the occupying imperial forces of Rome would take whatever they wanted, leaving the people hungry and poor—often making Barley cakes that lacked any nourishment. The Zealots wanted violence and war, but Jesus came with a counter-revolutionary message—I am the Bread of Life. How did his message change the world then, and how can we apply the message of revolution today?
