Type of Experience: Experiential

Content Type: Sweating your prayers - contemplative dance

5 Rhythms is a contemplative dance, a dynamic corporal practice, a movement meditation. Instead of seeking connectedness in an “other-worldly” dimension, we experience connection to ourselves and others through our physical bodies. The body becomes the sacrament and the sacrifice as we explore emotions, vulnerabilities, anxieties, aggression, despair, and hope. We learn to sweat our prayers and begin to process them through the body. Our emotion is converted into art; the art form creates awareness; and the awareness we experience can lead to action in our lives. There are 5 maps, journeys or routines through which we teach 5 Rhythms–Waves, Cycles, Heartbeat, Mirrors, and Self. The introductory 5 Rhythms session or the most common session people experience is Waves. In Waves, we travel through 5 different phases of music and dance - Flow, Staccato, Chaos, Lyrical, and Stillness. We will open the session with a brief introduction to talk about what we will practice. Then we will dance a 25 minute Waves session. Afterwards, we will debrief, share, and talk about our experience. During our dance, I will be using themes from Brian McLaren’s “Naked Spirituality” to provide aural prompts that naturally align with the 5 Rhythms.
