“How did you change your mind?” It’s a question I get asked frequently in various contexts. For example, when I’m with other social justice activists, they are always surprised to learn I come from fundamental evangelical Christianity, and they ask how I changed my mind about whatever issue we’re together protesting. My short answer is always two-fold: it happened gradually over many years, and “knowing a person’s story changes everything.” But being asked this so often regarding so many different topics got me thinking. As I reflected on my journeys from believing one thing to another, I realized it’s a very good question. How did I change my mind?? This session will briefly explore the psychological phenomenon of how people reason and change their minds, and I will share what things have made the biggest differences in my journey. Then we’ll have time to share our stories with each other about our individual experiences of changing our minds on various topics. Come prepared to self-reflect and tell your stories and maybe even change your mind about something!
