Caryn Crabb / Re-Imagining the Bible as a Musical Soundtrack
Sat 12:00pm - 12:50pm
Venue: Oasis
Co-Creators
Type of Experience: Presentation
Content Type: Exploring literary genres through music
This unique and playful approach to Bible interpretation invites you to listen to scripture as if each of its 66 books is actively reaching out to our ears, hearts, and minds through a different musical style. We’ll begin with a quick survey of styles: the Genesis myths as jazz, legends as anthems, psalms as folk songs, proverbs as advertising jingles, prophecy as psychedelic rock, epistles as show tunes, and more. Then individuals and/or small groups will break out for guided imagining and sharing. The ideas we’ll explore in this session are rooted in genre-based literary criticism and presented by a veteran literature teacher who loves music almost as much as she loves books and movies. Genre-based interpretation can be liberating and powerful, for it allows readers to truly embrace the Bible’s wide variety of voices and differing perspectives. We can appreciate these voices better if we listen to them in the same way that we listen to music - unhurried, unworried, and cheerfully open-minded. Bring your Spotify app if you have one!
