How would you like to live healthy for 500 years—or longer? This program examines the religious and social implications of radical physical, cognitive, affective, moral, and spiritual enhancements unfolding from developments in genetic engineering (e.g., CRISPR gene editing), tissue engineering and organ replacement, merging of computer technology with human biology, robotics, and nanotechnology. This “radical evolution” could trump terrorism and global climate change as the leading political, economic, social, and religious/spiritual issue of our time. If, e.g., the science of “practical immortality” is realized and the technology becomes widely available, it would arguably have a more radical impact than any other development in human history. A scholar of the “transhumanism” and religion conversation discusses theological, ethical, justice, and disability implications of radical enhancement.
