I became interested in the racial and economic injustices of the cash bail bonding system as the Commissioner of Corrections for Kentucky Governor Julian Carroll.Together we traversed the state informing the citizens as to why the cash bail bonding system needed to be abolished and replaced by a state operated pretrial release system within the Administrative Office of the Courts. A constitutional amendment was passed overwhelmingly. Today we are working with faith groups in North Carolina to create a statewide grassroots foundation committed to reforming cash bail bonding. To date we have the support of the North Carolina Episcopal Diocese, the National Synod of the United Church of Christ and the North Carolina Council of Churches. It is our hope that our efforts will create a momentum nationwide to reform privately operated cash bail bonding.
