Nobody Can Stay in the Garden of Eden: Lil Nas X, MONTERO, and Coming Out as Sacrament

Fri 12:00pm - 1:00pm

Venue: Convo 01

In March 2021, Lil Nas X released MONTERO (Call Me By Your Name, a song and music video that sent the world, particularly the evangelical Christian world, into a panic. Even in the midst of constant mass shootings, growing wealth inequality, and a raging pandemic, somehow a 21-year-old Black gay hip hop artist was the cause of our societal downfall. But, for those of us with ears to hear and eyes to see, MONTERO was, instead, one of the most liberating and beautiful pieces of queer art released in a very long time. This session will focus on the first third of the music video, in which Lil Nas X's character finds himself in a Garden of Eden-esque setting, to explore why paradise is worth losing and why coming out is a sacramental, heroic act.
