This experiential session will engage participants in meditation and mindfulness practices as contemplative prayer forms that open one to the presence of the living God within, around, and as yourself and others. Meditation will be presented as a way to love God with your whole heart, soul, mind, and strength by developing the discipline to show up each day to spend quality time with God, undistracted by thoughts, concepts, theories, images, and daydreams. Sitting meditation, walking meditation, and mindfulness in daily life will be explored as ways to harmonize body and mind, let go of distractions, and open to the inconceivable God who is beyond anything we can imagine. We will relate these practices to the prayer life of Jesus and to the Apostle Paul's urging to pray without ceasing. We will discuss how contemplative prayer helps us cultivate the experience of the underlying oneness of life which empowers us to engage in compassionate action to care for self, others, and the great earth.
