We suck at this. Most people are unable to hear other people's stories without mishandling them in some way. This inability to listen in a way that does no harm plays out in our families and communities but is also writ large on the national stage. You need only scroll through social media to see how shame and ignorance are weaponized when someone tries to tell a story that challenges the status quo. #MeToo, #ChurchToo, #BlackLivesMatter - look at the comments levied at people telling their stories and you will see how much damage can be done. How do you react when you hear a story that touches on a pain point or requires you to sit in the tension of questioning a comfortable belief? Are you a safe place for people to give voice to their experiences? The reality is we can all learn to be bear witness to each other's stories in a way that fosters healing and community.
