Stephen Finlan is a UCC minister at The First Church, West Bridgewater, MA. He has a Ph.D. in Pauline Theology from University of Durham (U.K.). Finlan taught at Fordham, Durham, and Drew Universities, and has nine theology books published. His main focus is on the problems with atonement (also the title of one of his books). He tries to get Christians and scholars to analyze and to question the received doctrines of blood atonement and substitutionary death. Finlan argues that these are usually distortions of what Paul and other biblical authors taught. His approach draws on psychology and other fields of study.
