Why Yes, You CAN Start a Progressive Church in the Deep South!

July 12, 201910:00 am10:50 am
In March 2018, Two Rivers Church, a United Methodist faith community, launched in Charleston, South Carolina, a city that epitomizes the racial, historical, political, gender, sexual and social realities of the Deep South. Against all odds (and advice from “experts”), their leadership team discerned over many months that what Charleston needed wasn’t another mainline church masquerading as an evangelical faith community but a radical, bold, church that was avowedly anti-racist and fully LGBTQIA+ inclusive. A year after starting, this new church is thriving in ways that we never expected – we are mostly in our 20s and 30s, full of young children, and a hospital for people who have experienced significant spiritual trauma in past churches.

In this presentation, we will share the process we used to start a church that bucks conventional wisdom, the obstacles to planting and the suprises along the way. We will answer questions and experience some of the practices that make our community unique.
